Speak, and speak often

It's no secret that speaking at local meetings can be a great resource for your business.
Last week I had an opportunity to speak at a realtors association. As an active member in my local Toastmasters chapter, public speaking is something I've focused on as part of my professional development. To date, I haven't had the opportunity to use a speaking engagement as a way to make contacts.
By speaking at this realtors meeting, I was able to:
- sharpen public speaking skills
- meet a potential partner in a new industry
- make several Web development contacts
- learn a few things about the real estate business
None of these benefits I consider 'instant gratification,' but these opportunites could prove extremely beneficial in future.
Admittedly, due to the timing of the meeting I wasn't very motivated to make the trip. After expereincing it firsthand, however, I'll definitely make a point of regularly speaking at as many events as I can manage.
For those interested in improving their public speaking abilities, Toastmasters is exactly what you're looking for. Find your local chapter at their Web site.
